Which BTR cam is right for your build?
The right cam depends on the engine, how it's used, and what you want from it. There's no universal answer. Here's the framework IMS uses when speccing a BTR cam for a customer build.
Naturally aspirated LS — Stage guide
The NA stage lineup runs from Stage 1 (conservative street, minimal idle lope, works on a stock tune) through Stage 5 (aggressive, needs full valvetrain work, tuned fuel and ignition, not a street cam). Most street builds that still need driveability sit between Stage 2 and Stage 3.
- Stage 1: Mild street. Better throttle response, minimal idle change. Works on near-stock setups.
- Stage 2 / Red Hot: Street performance. Noticeable idle, strong mid-range. Needs upgraded springs at 0.619"+ lift. Tune required.
- Stage 3/4: Track-capable street. Bigger idle, better top-end. Needs cam degree check, full spring kit, tune.
- Stage 5: Full build territory. Best with head work, ported intake, custom tune. Not for daily drivers.
PDS (push-down throttle stop, e.g. VE/VF L98 with DOD)
L98 and L76 engines with AFM/DOD need a cam designed to work with the cam-on-throttle system — or you delete AFM. BTR's PDS range is designed around that. Stage 2 PDS is the most common choice on a stock-displacement L98 that still needs some street manners. Stage 1 PDS if you want minimal risk on a work car.
Turbocharged LS
Boosted applications change the cam requirements significantly — you want more exhaust duration relative to intake, and LSA opens up compared to NA builds. BTR's dedicated turbo cam range is built around this. Don't run a NA-spec stage cam on a turbo build expecting the same results — the valve events don't suit boost.

Which BTR Cam for Your Build?
The right cam depends on how your engine is built and how the car gets driven. NA vs forced induction, compression ratio, RPM target, whether it sees the track — all of it matters. Here's a rough framework. If your build is at the edge of any of these categories, call us. A five-minute conversation saves a lot of money.

Turbocharged LS
BTR's LS Turbo cam is ground specifically for boosted applications. Tighter LSA, optimised for forced induction — different lobe profile to the NA or PDS cams. If you're turbo, don't run a NA cam and expect the same results.
